Many people look back fondly on their high school and college days in the marching band. Not only did they play an instrument and remember music, but they learned many lessons that they would need later in life.
How to work with others- Bands and orchestras are comprised of several members playing different instruments together like marching percussion to comprise one piece of music. Members of a marching band have to be in sync with each other at all times during their routine. In many instances in life, people must work together to achieve a common goal. Not having experience with this can hinder getting to that goal. Knowing how to work with others is a required skill for supervisory positions in any field. It is also necessary in relationships and parenting.
Multitasking- Marching bands play their instruments while walking and doing a routine. They have to have their full focus on both. Multitasking is a big part of having a career and a family. Balancing work, marriage, children, health, and leisure takes experience in doing multiple things at once. One of the main qualifications seen on a job posting is the ability to multitask.
Confidence- Performing requires confidence and an outgoing appearance even if the performer is an introvert. Non-confident band members do not play nor march as well therefore players have to learn that skill. Companies look for employees who show confidence because it brings them more business and confident workers are statistically more productive. Confident people make friends easier and help build more confident offspring since children learn from their parents.
Hard Work- Bands practice several times a week including weekends for hours at a time. Members of the band also practice on their own. For example, marching percussion may have to take private drum lessons. They have to learn how to play the song and do the routine. Being in a band is hard work but so is real life. Having a strong work ethic takes a person far. Employers look for hard workers and tend to promote them faster. There are many instances in life, such as training for a new job, that require constant practice. Being used to practicing until getting it right makes it easier.
Preparation- If a band is not prepared for their performance, they are going to make mistakes. Each member has to have their instrument and uniform ready, be on time, and have the routine memorized. Preparation is a major part of life. Business employees must prepare speeches or sales pitches. Teachers prepare lessons for their students. Parents must prepare for children. Having experience being prepared makes a person think of the small things that others may forget.
