Beginners

If you are are new to drumming and are interested in getting started, then you will need some practice equipment before you start playing.  It really comes down to 3 things to start drumming:

  • Practice Pad
  • Drumsticks
  • Music Books

Practice Pads

Choosing a practice pad typically depends on the type of drumming you will be practicing.  Since this site is specifically for marching percussion, I will only be recommending pads for that type of drumming.  Although, the pads that I mention below can be used in other styles of drumming too (i.e. Jazz, Orchestra, Drum set, etc.).

Evans 2-Sided Practice Pad, 12 Inch

The Evans 2-Sided Practice Pad (12″) is the last drum pad you’ll ever need.

From the Manufacturer

Music Books

Music books are vital to a drummer success.  In fact, it is the difference between a drummer and a percussionist.  Your playing  will go much further if you learn how to read music.  There are two  books that I highly recommend

  • Stick Control: For the Snare Drummer
  • Progressive Steps to Syncopation for the Modern Drummer
